Asscher-Cut Cubic Zirconia Engagement Rings
Being a diamond simulant crystal, Asscher-cut cubic zirconia engagement rings accurately recreate the shape an size of Asscher-cut diamonds and are an affordable choice for those who would rather not spend thousands of dollars on an engagement ring.
Even though the Asscher-cut is squarish, it is significantly different from the Princess-cut. An Asscher-cut gemstone will be stepped along its sides whereas the Princess-cut is tapered. (Imagine yourself sliding down the side of a Princess-cut but bumping down the side of an Asscher-cut).
Asscher-cut cubic zirconia engagement rings have a wider table that is designed to draw the eye into the stone. It highlights the gemstones clarity and depth but not its sparkle or fire.
The story of the Asscher-cut is interesting and perhaps should start with the question ‘How do you go about cutting a 3 thousand carat gemstone?’
Well this was exactly the predicament Joseph Asscher, a reputable diamond cutter of Amsterdam, found himself in more than one hundred years ago when he was ‘honoured’ with the task of cutting the great Cullinan diamond.

Special tools were developed to cleave and polish this gemstone of superb proportions. The stone’s grain was examined and re-examined. Sweat and tears shone from the factory floor and the air was pregnant with pressure and expectation. The slightest mistake could result in the diamond being damaged or completely disintegrating.
Is it any wonder then that the moment after Asscher successfully made the initial cleave to split the stone in two, he fainted and spent the next few days convalescing from nervous exhaustion…or so the story goes.
A few years prior to the Asscher Brothers’ anguish over the Cullinan, they had introduced a new cut which was essentially a square shaped emerald cut. This namesake Asscher cut had its heyday during the early 1900′s up until the pre-War and Depression days of the Roaring Twenties.
For a large part of the remainder of the 20th century, interest in the Asscher cut faded away whilst other cuts such as the classic Round-Brilliant and Princess swamped the market.
Recently however the cut has made a comeback with celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Zooey Deschanel, Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon all sporting Asscher cut engagement rings.
